About our Youth Section

Our Youth Section was one of the first in Hampshire when it was set up in 1963 and has produced a number of senior players and fine upstanding club members! It really picked up in 1968, but then there was a four year hiatus when in 1986 it was sadly allowed to fold after Ian Gass retired. Once restarted by Malcolm Kerry and Allen Green and their sons (soon to be joined by Neil Hay and his two sons) the production line of future first eleven players started again.

The section needed to continue its expansion and we needed more coaches, more team managers and more parents involved, so that we could spread the load. Then three initiatives came along in quick succession, like they do, to speed us on our way – the launch (and growth) of the Girls’ section, the ECB ‘Chance to Shine’ (C2S) scheme and the ECB and Sport England Clubmark scheme.

In the first year, the new C2S Charity was looking for 100 clubs to pilot the scheme and Malcolm Kerry offered to run the scheme for Aldershot CC in the Rushmoor area. Never one to miss a trick, Malcolm convinced the C2S Director that, as we were already working with the local junior schools, we should deliver a unique programme, combining both junior and secondary schools. This would allow us to encourage the boys and girls to carry on playing cricket after they had moved into the senior school which benefitted the schools, as they were able to create more teams. As importantly, we were able to identify talented youngsters early and invite them to join the Club.

Thanks largely to the efforts of both Malcolm Kerry and Allen Green, we still have a thriving youth section today. Their spirit and motivation to see this section grow is carried on by all of today’s volunteers, none more so than Roger Smith who won the Clubman of the Year Award in 2024.

The Kwik-Cricket Festival is still one of the most popular days of the year at the club, All-Stars Cricket has had fantastic attendance every year it has been run, and more and more of the youngsters are carrying on through to senior cricket.
